API Management for the AI Era: Leveraging OpenAPI Standards

Where and when : Dec, 10th – 13H30 until 17h30 – CNIT – Paris la Défense

Prix : 399 € € HT

This in-person masterclass, delivered by Frank Kilcommins and Erik Wilde, explores how modern API management practices and OpenAPI standards are evolving to meet the challenges and opportunities of the AI-driven digital landscape.

Through live demonstrations, guided exercises, and expert discussions, participants will learn how to design, govern, and evolve API ecosystems that help drive AI capabilities while maintaining quality, security, and compliance for everybody.

Participants must bring a laptop with an internet connection (Wi-Fi will be provided). There are practical exercises, but this workshop is not limited to developers. It is for anybody looking for a deeper understanding of how to take their API landscape into the AI age, and the exercises are chiefly for illustration and experimentation.

An official OpenAPI certificate will be delivered upon success !

Erik Wilde and Frank Kilcommins

Erik Wilde – Erik Wilde is an experienced and internationally known professional in the space of digital transformation and API strategy and management. Erik has a degree in computer science from TU Berlin and a PhD from ETH Zurich. Erik works at Jentic as Head of Enterprise Strategy, where he helps organizations to build the bridge between their API landscapes and their AI ambitions. He is the author of many articles and papers, various books, multiple standards, and regularly speaks at conferences around the globe. Erik’s « Getting APIs to Work » channel on YouTube is a place where developers, IT professionals, product managers, and digital leaders get regular updates about technologies, tools, events, standards, and the global API community. Erik is an OpenAPI Ambassador, organizing and speaking at events around the globe to promote the use of standards and help realize their full potential.

Frank Kilcommins – Frank Kilcommins is Head of Enterprise Architecture at Jentic, where he leads efforts to bridge APIs and AI through resilient, open standards-based design and tooling.
Over his 15-plus years in technology, Frank has helped define how enterprises design, scale, and govern APIs, from driving API-led digital transformations inside major multinationals to serving as Principal API Technical Evangelist at SmartBear, where he worked across the full API lifecycle spanning thousands of APIs.

As a member of the OpenAPI Initiative’s Business Governance Board, he helped guide the evolution of the OAI from a single-specification body to a multi-spec standards ecosystem. Most notably, he is the co-author of the Arazzo Specification, now becoming the blueprint for how AI agents orchestrate workflows safely and predictably.

At Jentic, Frank’s mission is to ensure that enterprise API investments deliver real value in the AI era in ways that are performant, predictable, energy efficient, secure, auditable, and compatible with existing architectures

Detail of the content

1. APIs as the Foundation for Modern Organizations

APIs are the backbone of digital and AI ecosystems. This opening block explains how well-managed APIs enable data access, orchestration, and automation at scale. We examine how API management practices evolve in the AI era, covering governance and interoperability, and how they turn fragmented systems into adaptable, AI-ready architectures. We also discuss how the better established concept of Developer Experience (DX) is similar to but still different from the newer concept of Agent Experience (AX).

2. Defining and Describing APIs for Humans and Machines

Every good API starts with a purpose and a design that’s based on this purpose. But even when designed that way, APIs only work at scale when they are described clearly and consistently. This module introduces OpenAPI as the universal language for describing HTTP-based APIs, and shows how good description practices power automation, collaboration, and compliance. Participants will see how design quality, structure, and validation go hand-in-hand by using OpenAPI and linting tools to ensure that APIs are both human-readable and machine-ready.

3. Extending OpenAPI: Overlays and Arazzo for the AI Age

The final section explores how OpenAPI is evolving through new OAI standards that address both API lifecycle tooling and AI-driven integration. We start with an overview of current patterns around the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and the limitations of these approaches. We then move towards more scalable approaches. Overlays allow teams to adapt specifications without duplication, and Arazzo defines workflows that capture intent and business logic across multiple APIs. Together, these innovations connect API design and AI execution, preparing participants to manage and communicate complex API ecosystems effectively.

How to get your certificate

This course is made of three different modules.

At the end of the course, a quiz will validate the adquired knowledge.

The quiz will take place on apiMasters’ platform, where you will need to create an account.

A perfect score at the quiz will give access to an OpenAPI certificate.
